'Speed is Emotional’ is a comedic, thought-provoking, and unwaveringly energetic theatrical spectacle. It traces the peaks and troughs of Jo Randerson’s life as a full-time performer and earnest mother—who also happens to have ADHD. The latter informs the show’s overarching themes and most memorable quirks: from fluorescent lighting displays and punchy sound effects to fast-paced yet poetic dialogue.

Jo Randerson embodies the bold mannerisms and natural gravitas of a seasoned theatre performer, seamlessly blending humour and raw vulnerability into their narrative. They invites the audience to join in: to cry, to laugh, or better yet, both.

Unabashedly wrestling with confronting questions about society’s treatment of psychological disorders, the double standards imposed on women, and the less-than-glamorous struggles of parenthood, Jo leans into the spotlight and says the quiet part out loud—with unflinching defiance and satirical flair. They expertly introduces the key symptoms of ADHD, grounding their meaning in deeply personal anecdotes and wildly imaginative pop culture references, successfully merging scientific insight with human sensitivity.

You might feel unsure at first—inquisitive about the metallic curtain backdrop, mildly amused by the erratic props, or perplexed by the abrupt rhythmic gymnastics routines (yes, that part is real). But trust me: this is the kind of surprise you don’t want to miss.

By the show’s end, joined by their cast of two bright-eyed sons, a deadpan husband, and the ever-present sound rapporteur, Elliot, Jo effortlessly has the audience clapping and cheering along to a spontaneous chorus of impassioned karaoke numbers.

I can’t imagine a better way to spend a Saturday night, especially while Auckland battles a tropical cyclone outside.

Craccum would like to take a moment to thank Elephant Publicity for their invitation to experience 'Speed is Emotional' by Jo Randerson.
