Ah yes. Dylan O’-fucking-Brien. So, just news, he bleached his hair for a role earlier this August. There’s a TikTok about it, and I highly recommend you watch it. FROTHING. But anyway, let’s get down to it: The First Time. Released in 2012 and written by Jon Kasdan tells the tale of raging teenage hormones and how car rides can escalate into a steamy, first-time-having-sex experience. Honestly, as much as I love this movie, because of the quirky comedy and O’-fucking-Brien, it’s just so painstakingly straight. The idea that penetrative sex, is the ‘main’ kind of sex is just SO heternormative. Sex is sex, whether it’s oral or by hand, and I guess movies like this just build up on a less progressive side, but sure, let’s forgive it for being made nine years ago.
Though, I do have to agree, that there is a certain amount of wit and dry humour that does satisfy… and the entertainment and drama of it all is super fun. I wouldn’t scale it towards the cringey side of film, but neither the ‘indie’ side. It’s just a film for the sake of being entertained. Though the way they depict a first time is just too sexy, rather than it just being a purely new experience. Aside from that, the heroine was obviously written by a male who wanted to depict a female lead who is ‘not like other girls’; with her ‘pick me’ personality it’s hard to distinguish whether or not she was made based on a specific character or to perpetuate a specific character.
