News: 125 Years of Women’s Suffrage – Leading Generational Change
125 years ago, New Zealand passed the Electoral Act 1893, becoming the first self-governing nation to grant women to right to vote in parliamentary elections. This landmark legislation followed years of courageous and persistent effort, injecting suffrage campaigns worldwide with hope and momentum.
This event is about celebrating the achievements of women in politics, and inspiring the next generation of women leaders in public life. It will have a strong ‘generational’ focus, featuring two former female Prime Ministers of New Zealand – Dame Jenny Shipley and Helen Clark. Over the evening, we will hear their reflections on lessons they have learnt during their time in office, and where they think the challenges that lie ahead are.
The Public Policy Club would like to thank Chorus, Anthem, and Spark for generously sponsoring this event.
