Playing at the NZ International Comedy Festival 2021
The cosiest comedy club in Central Auckland, The Classic, is lucky to have Heta and Courtney Dawson gracing the stage for the New Zealand International Comedy Festival. The father-daughter duo employ their relatable banter to produce warmth and intimacy in the comedy club, which can sometimes be a slightly less forgiving place. In the opening, Courtney, who was the RAW Quest Winner in 2019 and was also awarded Best Newcomer in the NZ Comedy Guild 2019, plays up a charming competitive nature, making fun, lovingly of her dad, the RAW Quest Finalist 2019. Once the two break apart to perform their sets, smoothing over a sometimes awkward transition with their natural connection, they both hit a real stride with the audience. As Courtney takes the audience through her expertly structured set, Heta calls out from the sideline with playful jabs. Once the pair switch, Courtney is the one in the first row, cringing and shaking her head at her dad, in a way that’s all too familiar. It’s a real treat to see the Dawson’s performing together, and you can definitely see all the lovely ways that they have influenced each other’s comedic style. It’s a show you should take your whānau to see. Don’t be surprised to get a few elbows to the side though, for the laughs that ring a bit too true.
