Bring your absolute worst ideas to life.
Have you ever had a random idea for something weird? Something chaotic and ridiculous that doesn’t need to exist, but for some reason you want it to…Well, you are definitely in the right place! Introducing: The Terrible Ideas Hackathon!
The Terrible Ideas Hackathon is a 46-hour weekend challenge taking place from March 10 to 12. You are invited to create the most terrible, awful, and brilliant ideas you can think of. From robot-driven tattoo guns and taser chess, to the world’s most professionally-bad D&D module, join us in a celebration of failure, creativity, and stupid, terrible decisions.
This event takes the 48 hour format you’ve previously seen in 48 hour film challenges and other hackathons, but turns it on its head! With robotics, 3D printing, pottery, painting, and fashion facilities, we are interested in bringing the creative and tech fields together for a fun weekend.
In the simplest sense, a hackathon is a challenge or event where people come together to make things or solve problems. While traditionally these events are focused on technology, the Terrible Ideas Hackathon is broadly about making anything, whether that’s through code, paintbrushes, craft knives, written word, video, music or otherwise. Throughout the weekend, we’ll help you find or create a team (these can be any size, but we recommend three to ten people). From there, you’ll pick something that you want to make—we’ll have lots of ideas swimming around, and you’re welcome to bring your own.
There are a few other events from Aotearoa and overseas that inspired this one—originally, the Stupid Shit No One Needs & Terrible Ideas Hackathon. We loved the idea of taking a break from our usual projects and just making something. Something fun, silly, and totally unique, and finished over the course of a weekend. So, in 2021, we gathered over 100 people to run the first ever NZ Terrible Ideas Hackathon. Together, we brought over 40 terrible things into this world, and with your help, we’re hoping to do that again.
More seriously, one of the big reasons this event exists is because we wanted to give all folks a chance to experience the magic of making something big and real in one weekend, without the stress and intimidating challenges of other events. This event is purpose-built to stretch your creative muscles, while building some of the skills you need to take on the next big challenge.
We hope first and foremost that you’ll have the chance to make some friends, learn new things, and have a bit of fun. Terrible Ideas is a celebration of bad ideas, but also good people. So, whether you’re gluing cardboard together, developing algorithms, or writing a 5,000-word Shrek fanfiction, we’d love to have you on board. Head to our website to sign up now!
