Gig Review: Magdalena Bay
Oh, my god. Oh, so hot.

Although skipping Aotearoa on their Imaginal Mystery Tour, the Floridian Synth-Pop duo Magdalena Bay graced the stage last weekend at the Place Foreshore at Hobsons Bay, Melbourne. If you’re someone who believes music peaked in the 80s and has lost faith modern pop, check out their singles Secrets (Your Fire), Killshot and Killing Time: they might change your mind. Nostalgia for the 80s, 90s and Y2K infuses in their aesthetic, coupled with lyrics that reflect living in our terminally online world.

That night Magdalena Bay delivered a theatrical performance with lead singer Mica making three costume changes in-between an energetic, well-oiled and jam-packed setlist which interweaved their best singles with the entirety of their latest album, Imaginal Disk. The crowd, for many, their first concert since Aussie’s Laneway, were well behaved, enthusiastic and sang along to all the songs. Overall, a solid show, delivering value for money and left me wishing they’d pay a visit to our shores next time round.
