The Craccum Administration Board (CAB) is thrilled to announce an exciting transformation for Craccum in 2025. As we approach our 98th year, we’re embracing a digital-first future to better serve the evolving needs of students at the University of Auckland.

In recent years, despite the dedication of talented editorial teams and compelling stories, Craccum has faced challenges in reaching students. Shifts in student engagement - fewer students on campus, the rise of online learning, and changing media consumption habits - have made it clear that it’s time for Craccum to adapt.

Declining readership and advertising revenue have also contributed to this decision. With print circulation dropping to as low as 1,000 copies per issue, many of which remained unclaimed, our digital presence also struggled to gain traction.

With the support of AUSA, the CAB reaffirms its commitment to independent student journalism in 2025. To stay relevant and accessible, Craccum will transition to a dynamic, digital-first publishing model, featuring:

• A brand-new website designed for easy access and engagement

• A daily publishing cycle to cover breaking news as it happens

• A goal of increased video, audio, and visual storytelling

• More coverage of key student issues and university affairs

• Stronger engagement with student voices to reflect the diverse university community

While Craccum will continue to be available in print, it will transition to a monthly edition to allocate more resources toward digital content expansion.

We welcome student feedback on this transformation. Share your thoughts on how Craccum can continue to grow, support student journalism, and hold the university accountable. Send your comments and suggestions to gm@ausa.org.nz.
