There’s nothing like a bit of Year 10 P.E. trauma to get you feeling the fight or flight reaction that only dodgeball can give you. At least that’s what a spectator alluded to at the AUSA dodgeball event held on Tuesday 25th March. Organised by AUSA and supported by Dodgeball New Zealand, the faculties found themselves head-to-head against each at the Hiwa Recreation Centre.

Each faculty showed up with a respectable number of players and a healthy amount of team confidence, and even some supporters too! After some chats with the teams, it was becoming clear which faculty was the one that gave everyone something to worry about: Engineering & Design. There were some special mentions to Law and Business as being a challenging opponent, but it was clear Engineering was the faculty to beat. With some encouraged friendly banter from yours truly, it seems there was only one faculty that had no one phased at all – Arts & Education. For those that were there, you already know what’s coming.

After the first round, teams got into their rhythm of playing and strategy with most teams wanting to change it up to account for the large space that was the playing field. There was a definite air of encouragement and spirit between faculties, seen by the support between FMHS and Arts & Education. But then the round that shocked everyone, Engineering versus Arts & Education. Based on pre-game comments it was clear who was going to win, but the under-Doggies were able to knock the competition out of the running. This victory built on the team’s morale even more, helping the Faculty of Arts & Education lead on towards winning the entire competition!

A great event with lots of spirit, camaraderie, and just enough harmless cheating from teams to keep it fun and competitive. Congratulations to Arts & Education, you may have just gotten some deserved attention as real competition when it comes to sports.

But hey, if you can’t laugh at yourself your RAs will certainly do it for you.
