Through library closures, the demolition of Old Shads, rogue science professors, and even something called Covid-19, Craccum has brought the latest news to the University of Auckland community.
It’s a huge community, including 40,000 students, 13,000 staff and countless others who are involved – from the vital work of Mojo’s baristas, to the dudes as bFM who graduated a few decades ago.
The role of an editor is to canvas this diverse community. We’re looking for someone, or some people, to take on the mantle of Craccum editor for 2022, its 94th year of publication.
Each week, Craccum prints a snapshot of life as a student in Auckland. That means the latest news on the university’s ongoing budget cuts, fresh reviews from Craccum’s arts critics on life in the city, deep dives into topics important to this community, and thoughtful essays from the next generation of poets, activists and advice gurus.
They’ve covered sports, after UoA students Theresa Fitzpatrick and Michael Brake won gold at the Tokyo Olympics.
They’ve covered food. They’ve covered fashion. They’ve covered Queer Rights. They’ve covered Te Ao Māori. They’ve covered Pasifika news and views. They’ve covered science. They’ve covered arts. They’ve covered film. They’ve covered accessibility and equity.
What I’m saying is, the editors at Craccum cover the full breadth of life and culture.
They can push the boat, and we thank them for it.
But after a year in the editors’ chair, co-editors Eda Tang and Brian Gu are heading off. Can you take the helm?
The Craccum Administration Board wants to hear your ideas about the future of Craccum.
The Board is calling for applications to be next year’s editor, or co-editor. It’s a role with a lot of responsibility and freedom, at a magazine that values editorial independence and student culture above all else.
If you’re interested in giving this a go, please get in touch.
Applications close on November 10.
